Day by day the jockeying continues.

As the high school track and field season begins to pick up steam, the battle to land on the Top 10 lists for 1A is an intense one, with athletes moving up and down almost on a daily basis.

Wednesday’s home meet helped propel a Coupeville relay team up into the spotlight, while its three individual standouts remain in the thick of things.

Senior Jacob Smith is a three-timer now, helping boost the Wolf 4 x 100 unit, while retaining his slots on the leader board in the 100 and 200.

Juniors Lindsey Roberts and Danny Conlisk are also still among the top performers, though Conlisk slid off the chart in the 400 (he’s now #14), while moving up in the 800.

The Wolves won’t have any chances to improve their standings for a bit, with their next meet not until Apr. 12.

But, at the moment, here’s Coupeville’s representatives on the 1A Top 10 rankings charts managed by athletic.net.

Girls:

100 Hurdles — Lindsey Roberts (6th) 16.17 *Same as last week*

Boys:

100 — Jacob Smith (10th) 11.57 *Down four slots*

200 — Smith (3rd) 23.27 *Same as last week*

800 — Danny Conlisk (10th) 2:07.79 *Debut on charts*

Tis the time of the season for reunions.

With the holidays in full swing, a lot of former Wolf sports stars are back home from college, and many of them swung by the gym recently to catch up with family and former teammates.

Letting his camera wander the whole 360-degree field, photog John Fisken captured some of the reunions, plus a mix of band members at work and fans being fans.

The smorgasbord of holiday pics seen above are courtesy him.

Even with a fractured ankle, Sean Toomey-Stout is still faster than you or me.

With Coupeville sweeping all nine sets from Chimacum Tuesday, there was plenty to cheer about for Wolf spikers.

Imagine if this was the olden days, when you had to go in the darkroom and develop every picture.

Freed up by the advent of digital, wanderin’ photo god John Fisken madly clicked away Tuesday, bopping between Coupeville soccer and volleyball contests.

Along the way, he also let his lens slide into the crowd to capture what was brewing off the beaten path.

The pics above, while providing a nice overview of everything, are just the tip of the iceberg, however.

To see the billions of pics Fisken shot, there’s two handy links below.

And when you jump, remember, purchases fund college scholarships for CHS student/athletes, and they make it more likely he’ll return to Cow Town.

Sophomore Sean Toomey-Stout, Coupeville’s leading rusher and tackler, fractured his ankle Friday at Vashon. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

“The Torpedo” has been sunk.

Sean Toomey-Stout’s breakout season has ended at the halfway point, after confirmation the sophomore fractured his ankle in the third quarter of Friday night’s game at Vashon Island.

An ER visit before returning to Whidbey confirmed the dire prognosis — he will need surgery after the swelling in his ankle comes down.

Toomey-Stout will be on crutches when he returns to school Monday and mom Beth Stout asked for his friends and fans to “send lots of thoughts his way, as he is already missing football and his team.”

Coupeville’s leading rusher and tackler this season, he’s been a huge part of the reason the Wolves are 3-2, already matching last year’s win total.

With his quicksilver moves and sterling work ethic, Toomey-Stout has blossomed from being an impact player as a frosh to being the heart and soul of the CHS defense.

His loss invokes memories of other similar injuries which claimed Wolf greats Paul Messner and Ian Barron during record-setting seasons of their own.

Sean’s absence creates a huge hole for Coupeville, as he was a key player on offense, defense and special teams, where and he big brother Cameron pursued return men like heat-seeking missiles.

Toomey-Stout entered Friday’s game with 47 tackles, which put him #4 among all 1A players whose teams have reported stats to MaxPreps.

He tore up Vashon in the first half, scoring on six and three-yard runs, giving him four touchdowns on the year, spurring CHS to a 42-7 win.

His injury came midway through the third quarter when he went down on a play near the left sideline.

A Vashon trainer attended to him on the field, and he eventually came off with assistance from coaches, but couldn’t put any weight on his foot.

By the time the game was done, his foot was showing considerable swelling.

Though, as normal, “The Torpedo” flashed the thumbs-up sign at moms Lisa and Beth when they asked how he was feeling and would have crawled back into the game if the trainer had turned her back for half a second.

Coupeville, which sits at 1-1 in Olympic/Nisqually League play, a game out of first place, heads to Port Townsend (2-0, 2-3) next Friday for a grudge match and then plays three straight at home against Bellevue Christian, Klahowya and Chimacum.

As the Wolves chase a winning season and a playoff berth, they will need other young players like Chris Battaglia, Shane Losey, Andrew Martin and Teo Keilwitz to step up in Toomey-Stout’s absence.

If football stats are like stocks, Chris Battaglia is trending upwards.

The Coupeville High School junior had his best rushing game of the season Friday, grinding away for 53 yards against a tough, beefy Nooksack Valley defense.

That gave the Wolf passing game a little breathing room, where Hunter Downes (194 yards) and Shane Losey (16) combined to break the 200-yard barrier.

The biggest beneficiary of their heaves was Hunter Smith, who hauled in four tosses for 130 yards.

As he continues to pile up game, season and career CHS football records for receiving yards and touchdowns, as well as interceptions, the senior standout is also inching up on another maybe less-noticed milestone.

Those four snags gives Smith 95 career receptions, putting him on the cusp of breaking triple digits.

He pulled in 32 as a sophomore, 49 as a junior and has 14 through this year’s first three games.

Also of note is the tackling stats of sophomore stud Sean Toomey-Stout.

He’s racked up 38 take-downs through three games, which puts him on pace for 127, not that far off the school single-season record.

That belongs to Joe Kelley, who collected 142 tackles during the 2001 campaign.

As Coupeville (2-1) prepares for its league opener against Charles Wright (2-1) this Friday (7 PM kickoff), let’s take a gander at the season-to-date stats, as compiled by CHS coaches and posted on MaxPreps.

Keep in mind, though, that when you look at where Wolf players are ranked, it comes with one caveat — not all teams in the state are actively reporting stats.
