Welcome to life on a bus (and a ferry).

Seven of the eight contests next week for Coupeville High School teams are road affairs, with just Monday’s volleyball match at home.

It’ll be a nice test for the Wolves, to see how they respond to playing outside their comfort zones.

And a good way for the school district to test the gas mileage on those aforementioned buses.

So, there’s that.

CHS volleyball gets that lone home contest Monday against South Whidbey, then travels to Friday Harbor Tuesday afternoon.

For soccer, the girls also travel to Friday Harbor Tuesday, then trek to La Conner Thursday, while the boys go to La Conner Tuesday and Grace Academy Friday night.

Wolf football heads to Friday Harbor for a first-place showdown Friday, while cross country runs at Mount Vernon Christian a day before.

Wolves (l to r) Ivy Rudat, Mikayla Wagner, and Noelle Western celebrate making the medal stand Saturday in Shoreline. (Elizabeth Bitting photos)

The Wolves went 15 strong.

The weather was hot, the times hotter.

Running on the “most difficult course of the season” Saturday in Shoreline, eight of 15 Coupeville Middle School cross country runners set PR’s.

The event was the King’s Roller Coaster Trail Run, which sent harriers across a 1.6-mile course in a race which featured 74 middle school racers.

There were another 155 high school runners taking part in their own races, though Coupeville’s team was not present.

It wasn’t missed, however, as the CMS squad was ready to own the spotlight.

The Wolves sent three runners to the awards podium, with Mikayla Wagner (6th), Ivy Rudat (9th), and Noelle Western (10th) all earning medals for their performances.

On the boys side, Easton Green just missed, finishing in 12th.

Bear Creek won the boys team race, while host King’s came out on top in the girls competition.

CMS was fourth, and third, respectively.

Wolf coach Elizabeth Bitting headed back to Whidbey feeling good about her young athletes, and how they handled the day.

“The sun was out, and it was hot, hot, hot, but not as hot as the eight athletes that PR’D on a hilly, hilly course!,” she said.

“It was glorious!!!”

Making the day better were the Wolf faithful who made the trek to the big city with the team.

“Thank you to all the parents and grandparents who made it out to cheer the team on!,” Bitting said. “We appreciate your support and you!”

Mitchell Hall is running on sunshine. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

If you build a course, they will run.

Coupeville High School’s revived cross country program is charging hard into its fourth year of competition, and hosting home meets at Fort Casey State Park is one of the bonuses.

The course is the best one in the region, and wanderin’ photographer John Fisken even pops up sometimes to snap pics.

To see everything he shot Friday, and possibly purchase some glossies to send to the in-laws in Albuquerque, pop over to:

Bryley Gilbert knows this course by heart.

“Can I speak to you about our lord and savior, Peter Cottontail?”

“I’m comin’ for you, bunny!!”

“Cripes, it’s the po-po!!”

Helen Strelow can’t be caught.

Carson Field (front) and Cole White tear up the course in tandem.

Closer and closer.

Mount Vernon Christian’s boys cross country team is still the gold standard in the Northwest 2B/1B League.

But Coupeville is coming up fast in the rearview mirror.

Three days after coming within 11 points of catching the Hurricanes in the team standings at a multi-team meet, the Wolves shaved their deficit down to nine while running Friday at Fort Casey State Park.

MVC had the first three runners across the line, led by Alexander Hoksbergen, but Coupeville slotted in at 4-5-6-7, then added 10-11-12 to stay close.

The final margin of victory for the Hurricanes this time around was 23-32, after winning 25-36 at Orcas three days earlier.

Concrete didn’t have enough runners to score as a team in the boys race, while MVC and Coupeville each had four female runners, not enough to form full teams.

Hurricane junior Maddy Nielsen outdueled Wolf Helen Strelow to claim the girls individual title.

Coupeville gets right back into action Saturday, with a trip to Shoreline for the King’s Roller Coaster Trail Run.

Action everywhere.

With six Coupeville High School fall sports teams in action — seven if we count varsity and JV volleyball as their own entities — wanderin’ photographer John Fisken has plenty of targets.

The pics above and below, which give you a little feel for the wide range of activities goin’ down, are courtesy him.
