OK, life isn’t always fair.

We’re starting off with that because I have 25 portraits of Coupeville High School cheerleaders and not enough room to run all of them at one time.

I mean, I have the room (it’s the internet, there are no page lengths), but very few people will scroll through that epic a story.

Most of my photo essays are a crisp six to eight photos, which has seemed to be the ideal length for readers.

Enough pics to feel like you got your money’s worth (even though you viewed this page for free…), without total brain overload.

So, I tried to make things as equal as possible by tossing the numbers 1-25 in a random number generator and letting the whims of fate pick who gets their glossy portraits on the internet this fine day.

Truth be told, at some point this season all of the portraits will appear, so, for those who didn’t make the cut (as selected by sheer randomness), your time will come.

And after all, photo #4 is a team photo, so you’re all there anyway.

Everyone approaches their portrait differently.

Some smile. Others go as far to the opposite extreme as possible.

Whichever route they pursue, John Fisken (and his trusty camera) are there to document their choice.

The pics above are just a small taste of those he captured at recent CHS fall sports practices.

To be fair, I randomly selected two athletes from each of the sports (volleyball, tennis, soccer and football), varsity and JV, to showcase some of his work.

To see more (purchases help fund college scholarships for Wolf student/athletes), pop over to:

There isn’t currently a link for the tennis portraits, but if you contact Fisken at http://www.johnsphotos.net/, he can let you know what he has to choose from.

Valen Trujillo is what they call multi-talented.

When the Coupeville High School senior is not busy pounding volleyballs, as she and her teammates did at a four-day Western Washington University summer camp last week, she’s still busy putting her many skills to work.

One of those side projects is snapping portraits of her teammates, as shown in the pics above.

Take note, John Fisken.

There’s a new paparazzi in town and she has an eye for the biz.

The paparazzi is branching out.

Camera clicker John Fisken, who has made a name for himself snapping pics at sporting events on and off Whidbey Island, has expanded his services.

Fisken, who by sheer coincidence celebrates a birthday today, has launched a web site — John’s Photos — where you can experience all of his snappy plans for the future.

While he’ll still be offering all the usual sports fare, a mix of action shots and behind the scenes portraits, Fisken will now be available to shoot just about anything, with two minor exceptions.

No weddings and he’s not going into the delivery room with you to document lil’ Billy or Sally’s probably-messy entrance into the world.

But, want a beautiful family portrait?

Want someone to document your prom, your military ball, your family reunion or a billion other things?

Need crystal clear pics documenting your real estate listings?

He’s the guy, boasting a strong work ethic and reasonable prices.

You could reach out to him cause it’s his birthday.

Or, you could do it because he’s very, very good at what he does, both in terms of picture quality, diversity of what he shoots and his ability to work with anyone.

I mean, he puts up with me for nine months a year, as I harass him day and night with increasingly bizarre and frantic sports shooting requests.

If he can survive that, he’ll do just fine getting great aunt Ethelyne to let him capture a photo worthy of putting on the mantle.

But don’t just take my word for it.

To see what I’m rambling about, pop over to his site and see what Fisken offers, while basking in some of the work he’s already produced.

Gretchen Smith

Fans, fans as far as the eye (or camera) can see.

Coupeville sports boosters are as dedicated as any you will meet, and jam the stands for almost every Wolf sports event.

Softball is no exception, and, as CHS played Meridian Saturday, wanderin’ photo man John Fisken let his camera slide through the crowds to snap some portraits for us.
