Wolves bid for track glory

The numbers tell a positive story.

As the high school track and field season continues to unfold, Coupeville, which has its biggest roster in decades, continues to draw notice.

The latest accolade comes from Evans Rankings, whose computer currently ranks the Wolf boys as the #3 team in 2B, while placing the CHS girls at #6.

Chewelah’s boys and Okanogan’s girls top those standings at the moment.

Plus, scan the results on Athletic.net, and you’ll find a large pack of Wolves hanging out in the upper echelons, as well.

Wolves set the pace

It’s still really early.

The state track and field championships are a solid two months away, and Coupeville High School is scheduled to appear in 10 more meets between now and then.

But … if the season ended today, the Wolves would have a new state champ.

That’s because, as of Feb. 20, sophomore Lyla Stuurmans is the fastest 2B girl in the 400.

“The Franchise” leads an impressive list of Wolves currently ranked in the Top 10 among all athletes in Coupeville’s classification.

Early or not, give them their props for what they’ve accomplished through the first two meets of the season.

Gridiron giants crack top 10

Our computer overlords are a benevolent bunch.

At least this week.

We still need to keep an eye on Skynet, but Newman, the system employed by noted numbers cruncher Matthew Evans, likes Coupeville at the moment.

The latest tally released by Evans Rankings has Wolf football in the top 10 for the first time this season.

Sporting a record of 3-1 heading towards a Homecoming showdown with Friday Harbor, Bennett Richter’s 2B squad has wins over 1A schools Klahowya and Sultan to its credit.

The only loss on the record came to another 1A school, South Whidbey, which is 4-0 and ranked #4 in its classification by Newman.

The work of Evans Rankings doesn’t officially impact the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association and its own RPI rankings, but it should, as the former often turns out to be much more realistic than the latter.

All hail our computer overlords! Now get back to practice.

Academic stars earn Top 10 status

She’s the best of the bunch.

Mary Milnes, a two-sport athlete who also excelled in the classroom, tops the Coupeville High School Class of 2022, earning Valedictorian honors with a 3.99 GPA.

The Wolf soccer and tennis ace is headed to the University of Washington to study biology after wrapping up her CHS stint.

Milnes nips Ian Sylvester (3.97) in the GPA race, with the latter notching Salutatorian honors for a group counting down the final days until graduation.

Coupeville’s Class of ’22 receives its diplomas this Saturday, June 11, in a 1 PM ceremony set for Mickey Clark Field.
