New season, new dreams!!

The young guns have headed outside.

Coupeville Middle School kicked off the final sports season of the school year Tuesday, with Wolf coaches welcoming a huge turnout for the start of track and field.

CMS returns its coaching staff from last year — Elizabeth Bitting, Jon Gabelein and Larry Hurlburt — with Deb Smith popping in to help out as a volunteer.

The Wolf coaches gave their young athletes an early test, sending them down trails for a 5-6 mile run on a sunny afternoon.

“They did amazing!,” Bitting said. “No complaints, no whining, no early turn-a-rounds, just some amazing great attitudes out there!!!

“Loved every moment of it.”

   The catcher is ready, but she’ll never get her mitt on the ball, as Lauren Rose smokes yet another hit.

The games will return.

Yes, today is the third consecutive day without a Coupeville team playing, as a rain-soaked spring break plays out.

But Friday, weather permitting, brings the return of Wolf softball, and Saturday is slated to see softball, baseball and soccer all take the field.

Until then, a smattering of photos, drawing from all the various spring sports, to remind you of what it looks like when athletes are actually in action.

CMS track heads to starting line!!

Almost time to head outside.

With basketball done, Coupeville Middle School moves on to the final athletic season of the school year with the start of track Apr. 10.

The Wolves put in two weeks of practice before their first meet, and will get to compete at their own facilities in two of five meets, including the league championships.

The schedule:

Wed-Apr. 25 — Coupeville and Forks @ Stevens (3:15)

Wed-May 2 — Coupeville and Stevens @ Blue Heron (Port Townsend) (3:15)

Tues-May 8 — Chimacum and Blue Heron @ Coupeville (3:15)

Tue-May 15 — Coupeville and Forks @ Sequim (3:15)

Wed-May 23 — Olympic League Championships – Blue Heron, Chimacum, Sequim, Forks and Stevens at Coupeville (2:00)

Fight for some chart love!!

Day by day the jockeying continues.

As the high school track and field season begins to pick up steam, the battle to land on the Top 10 lists for 1A is an intense one, with athletes moving up and down almost on a daily basis.

Wednesday’s home meet helped propel a Coupeville relay team up into the spotlight, while its three individual standouts remain in the thick of things.

Senior Jacob Smith is a three-timer now, helping boost the Wolf 4 x 100 unit, while retaining his slots on the leader board in the 100 and 200.

Juniors Lindsey Roberts and Danny Conlisk are also still among the top performers, though Conlisk slid off the chart in the 400 (he’s now #14), while moving up in the 800.

The Wolves won’t have any chances to improve their standings for a bit, with their next meet not until Apr. 12.

But, at the moment, here’s Coupeville’s representatives on the 1A Top 10 rankings charts managed by athletic.net.

Girls:

100 Hurdles — Lindsey Roberts (6th) 16.17 *Same as last week*

Boys:

100 — Jacob Smith (10th) 11.57 *Down four slots*

Home is where the wins are!!

Their stadium, their day to shine.

The Coupeville High School track and field squad hosted a five-team home meet Wednesday, then tore up the joint, capturing nine wins and 32 PR’s.

The Wolf girls cruised to a team win, piling up 209 points to easily outdistance Klahowya, which tallied 167.

Mount Vernon Christian (99), Port Townsend (78) and Chimacum (39) rounded out the field.

On the boys side, it came down to the slimmest of margins, with MVC nipping Coupeville 169.5-167 to nab the team crown.

Klahowya (155) made it a three-team race, while Port Townsend (77) and Chimacum (34.5) brought up the rear.

The Wolf girls romped to a win in the 4 x 200 relay (Lindsey Roberts, Ashlie Shank, Mallory Kortuem, Maya Toomey-Stout), with Roberts (200), Lauren Bayne (high jump) and Mckenzie Meyer (pole vault) also landing atop the awards stand.

Coupeville’s boys triumphed in the 200 (Jacob Smith), 800 (Danny Conlisk), high jump (Chris Battaglia) and long jump (Jean Lund-Olsen).

Smith and Lund-Olsen teamed up with the Toomey-Stout boys, Cameron and Sean, to race to a victory in the 4 x 100.

Battaglia had himself a huge afternoon, also finishing second in all three throwing events (shot put, discus and javelin).

Coming off its auspicious showing, Coupeville won’t compete again for two weeks.

With spring break on the horizon, the Wolves next meet is Apr. 12, when they travel to Silverdale Stadium for an event hosted by Olympic High School.

While Wednesday’s meet was originally the only home meet listed on the schedule, CHS officials have confirmed they are pulling together a second one.

Friday Harbor and Lopez Island are now set to come to Coupeville Apr. 23 for a three-team meet.
