Academic stars earn Top 10 status

She’s the best of the bunch.

Mary Milnes, a two-sport athlete who also excelled in the classroom, tops the Coupeville High School Class of 2022, earning Valedictorian honors with a 3.99 GPA.

The Wolf soccer and tennis ace is headed to the University of Washington to study biology after wrapping up her CHS stint.

Milnes nips Ian Sylvester (3.97) in the GPA race, with the latter notching Salutatorian honors for a group counting down the final days until graduation.

Coupeville’s Class of ’22 receives its diplomas this Saturday, June 11, in a 1 PM ceremony set for Mickey Clark Field.

Wildcats (and friends) tee it up

Some tee shots, a few divots, and a whole lot of purple.

Whidbey Golf Club was hoppin’ Saturday, as Oak Harbor High School’s athletic department held its big fundraiser for the year.

The event drew a lot of Wildcats, a handful of Coupeville duffers, and wanderin’ photographer John Fisken, who kept his camera clickin’ all day.

Youth hoops skills camp planned

The hardwood calls.

The Coupeville Youth Basketball Association is offering a two-day skills camp later this month for children entering grades K-6.

The camp, which runs June 21-22 at the high school gym, will give young players a chance to “improve your dribbling, shooting, passing, teamwork, and defensive skills, along with some fun competitions!”

Cost is $20 and the event is open to Coupeville School District students.

Each day will run from 9-11:30 AM, and you need to register by June 12 to ensure getting a camp t-shirt.

Payment is due the first day of camp.

Next year already on tap

In 92 days, the games start counting again.

With spring sports wrapped up and graduation bearing down quickly, the 2021-2022 school year is all but done, and yet, here we are already looking ahead.

Coupeville High School football, and new head coach Bennett Richter, open fall practice Aug. 17 — with soccer, cross country, tennis, and volleyball slated to kick things off Aug. 22.

Then, when Friday, Sept. 2 rolls around, the Wolf gridiron squad travels to Silverdale to face Klahowya and the 2022-2023 school year — at least sports wise — is up and roaring.

While most other CHS sports teams already have at least partially formed schedules, you can expect some tinkering between now and then, so we’ll wait to post anything until we get closer.

But football seems pretty set in stone, so we’ll take a chance and jump the gun.

The Wolves, who went 3-5 a season ago, snapping a two-year run of posting winning records, have five home games against just four road trips.

Coupeville, a 2B school, is punching above its weight class in non-conference games, with plans to face four 1A foes, plus 2A Bellingham.

Only one opponent — South Whidbey at 6-4 — posted a winning mark in fall 2021, with the seven teams on the schedule combining for a 24-36 record last time out.

Among the three 2B schools in the Northwest 2B/1B League, Friday Harbor is the defending league champs, having held off Coupeville 13-6 in a triple overtime thriller to decide that honor.

La Conner, by comparison, suffered through the worst football season in an otherwise rich school athletic history, being outscored 231-0 across five games.

Young Wolves cap oval season

“Ready to launch!”

The meet which never ends finally ended.

The two-day Cascade League Track and Field Championships — which has a five-day gap between sessions — wrapped up Wednesday at Lakewood, giving Coupeville Middle School a final chance to impress.

The Wolves came away with a pair of individual wins, thanks to 8th grader George Spear (800) and 6th grader Wyatt Fitch-Marron (High Jump), with the team garnering 19 PR’s.

The victories come on the heels of a win in the 1600 by 8th grader Malachi Somes during the opening session May 26.

The seven-team meet brings an official end to the season for Coupeville and its compatriots.
