Landen Miller (GoFundMe photo)

A fundraiser has been started to help Landen Miller’s family.

The 33-year-old Coupeville High School grad, a father of five, died Monday after a rollover car crash on South Ebey Road.

Miller worked in the ER at the WhidbeyHealth Medical Center, and could often be spotted at Central Whidbey Little League games involving his children.

During his time at CHS, he played tennis and baseball for the Wolves before graduating with the Class of 2002.

“Great kid, hard working, always a smile, very quiet demeanor but impactful with his play,” is how former Wolf baseball coach Willie Smith describes Landen.

Before every new high school sports season begins, photo day is a time-honored ritual.

John Fisken hoists his camera and madly clicks away, getting a pic of every girl and boy who will be in uniform for the Wolves — or at least every one who remembers to show up for photo day.

Then he’s nice enough to send them my way.

As the season progresses, I sprinkle those portraits across the top of numerous stories.

But, without fail, especially during a busy season like fall, with volleyball, tennis, soccer, cheer and football, there will be some which haven’t seen the light of day.

So, today, I offer up a mixture of portraits, which, for whatever reason, haven’t had their moment in the spotlight until now.

Sort of spring cleaning, just in late fall.

Coupeville High School girls, don’t throw away your shot! (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

The best time of the year is almost upon us.

Yep, that’s right — basketball season.

The first day of practice for Coupeville High School hoops is Monday, Nov. 13, but this Friday, Nov. 3, all girls interested in playing are invited to a meeting with coaches David and Amy King.

It’ll go down at 11:36 AM in the CHS drama room (so, you’re encouraged to bring your lunch and nosh while the Kings talk).

The meeting is for everyone — returning players, new players, incoming freshmen, managers, you name it.

The Wolf girls are the most successful sports program at CHS since Coupeville switched leagues in 2014. They enter this season riding a 27-game win streak in Olympic League play and are three-time defending conference champs.

But, the Kings have also shown great skill in coaxing the best out of every player, regardless of skill level, so don’t let inexperience keep you from trying something new.

Whether you’re a six-foot-eight transfer who put up 20 and 20 a game at your previous school, or a first-timer who wants to have the best sports experience of their high school days, this is for you.

“If you aren’t quite sure, but “thinking about it,” come on in,” David King said. “It doesn’t hurt to come talk.”

Security has been alerted that these three scamps are in the stadium.

The snack shack hums along with (l to r) Kyla Briscoe, Connie Lippo and Katrina McGranahan running things.

The CHS Musician of the Year, Allison Wenzel, lays down a funky beat.

Yes, Ben Olson is taking requests. Thanks for asking.

Kathy Bayne (right) magically appears, bearing beverages for all, to the delight of Tami (left) and Payton Aparicio.

Sometimes there’s more action off the field.

Whenever he hits a game, like he did Friday night when he prowled the sidelines as Coupeville football played, John Fisken likes to swing his camera around to the audience as well.

The pics above, a mix of fans, snack shop operators and CHS band members, remind you why life under the Friday Night Lights is a prep sports experience like none other.

“Where do you think you’re going??”

Absolutely, positively up to shenanigans.

Camtastic being Camtastic.

“I … am … outta here!!”

He finally made it to town.

With his son Michael a starter for the Oak Harbor High School football team, wanderin’ photo man John Fisken hasn’t been seen in Coupeville during any football games.

Until this past Friday, when the Wolves lucked out thanks to OHHS holding its Homecoming game on a Thursday.

Camera(s) in hand, Fisken went right back to work, and the pics above are courtesy him.
