Keeping an eye on the action.

Different town, same game.

Coupeville High School grad Dante Mitchell is now working in Oak Harbor, coaching basketball at North Whidbey Middle School.

That follows on the heels of his time as a Wolf, where he was both a player, and later, a coach, continuing the work of mom (and hoops guru) Avis.

As Dante worked the sidelines Monday in a season-opening matchup against Mt. Baker Middle School, wanderin’ photographer John Fisken was on hand to document the moment.

Halfway through her high school career, Maddie Georges tops all active CHS girls basketball scorers. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

Hawthorne Wolfe enters his senior season #24 all-time across the history of Wolf boys basketball.

It’s a living, ever-updating history.

Entering the 2021-2022 high school basketball season, I’ve been able to document 402 Coupeville boys and 234 girls who have tallied at least one point in a varsity game.

With boys hoops at CHS stretching back to 1917, there are understandably some early-day names still missing from my records.

Though, at this point, those missing gunners played in prehistoric eras where scoring was rare, so the top of the charts is pretty safe.

Unless we ever track down the 1951-1952 Wolf boys stat sheet and complete Tom Sahli’s stellar totals.

Until then, the one former CHS grad to ever face-off with hoops immortal Elgin Baylor will sit at #19 all-time, while we’ll know he’s probably top 10.

But with current players, our totals are pretty impeccable, which puts us in a good place.

There are 10 boys and 13 girls currently walking the hallways at CHS who have scored in a varsity uniform, including two who did so before they were actually in high school.

Thanks to tweaks in the rules, Lyla Stuurmans and Savina Wells got a jump on their hoops careers, allowed to play on the Wolf varsity last season as 8th graders.

Maddie Georges, a junior, and senior Hawthorne Wolfe are the top returning scorers, and it’s Hawk who is ready to make a run at history.

He enters his senior campaign in 24th place on the all-time CHS boys scoring chart, just 24 points from cracking the top 20.

With 664 points, Wolfe would need to scorch the nets for 474 more to pass Jeff Stone (1967-1970) and Mike Bagby (2002-2006), tied for #1 among CHS boys with 1,137 points apiece.

Brianne King’s school record of 1,549 points, however, set between 1999-2003, seems safely out of reach.

Barring any schedule changes, Coupeville’s boys have 20 regular season games, and the hope of a playoff run afterwards.

Wolfe would need to pop for 23.7 points a night over 20 games to reach 1,138, and he went for 21 a game in a pandemic-shortened 12-game season as a junior.

So, you’re saying there’s a chance?

Lyla Stuurmans and Coupeville High School volleyball finished second at the district tourney. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

Logan Downes and the Wolves finished the season with a win against a Seattle-based team.

We’ve reached the finish line.

Saturday’s state cross country meet marked the end of fall sports for Coupeville High School, so today’s standings are the last you’ll see until basketball season gets going.

Not all Northwest 2B/1B League teams are done yet, with La Conner volleyball heading to Yakima to make a run at a third-straight 2B state title.

Darrington’s spikers, who Coupeville beat twice this season, are also off to state, but at the 1B level.

The Loggers benefited from taking part in a 10-team District 1 tourney which offered up three tickets to the big dance.

Knocking off NWL foe Orcas Island in the third-place match Saturday, Darrington joins Grace Academy and Shoreline Christian in advancing.

Despite finishing ahead of the Loggers in the regular season, Coupeville had a tougher postseason draw, with just three 2B schools competing for one trip to state.

Also still in play are a bunch of soccer squads, with six NWL teams making the cut for what are combined 1B/2B state tourneys.

On the boys side, Orcas Island, Providence Classical Christian, Mount Vernon Christian, and Friday Harbor are still alive, while MVC and Friday Harbor’s girls teams play on as well.

But here in Coupeville, it’s time to head into the gym.

Final fall sports standings:

Coupeville 4-10 4-10
Grace Academy 4-12 4-12

CPC-Lynnwood 0-9 0-9

Northwest League football:

School League Overall
Friday Harbor 4-0 5-5

Best team showing since the ’80s.

Coupeville High School sent three cross country runners to the line at the state meet in Pasco Saturday, the most since Natasha Bamberger was leading the Wolf girls to glory during the “Greed is Good” decade.

Marking the end of the fourth season for the CHS harrier comeback story, juniors Helen Strelow, Claire Mayne, and Mitchell Hall all hit the trails at the Sun Willows Golf Course.

Coupeville previously sent Danny Conlisk and Catherine Lhamon to state — in separate seasons — after reviving its in-house cross country program in 2018.

Hall had the fastest finish of the three Wolves Saturday, claiming 58th while covering the 5,000-meter course in 18 minutes, 44.4 seconds.

There were 112 runners in the boys 1B/2B race.

Mount Vernon Christian, which Coupeville dueled with all season in Northwest 2B/1B League action, finished sixth in the boys team race, with top Hurricane Devin Van Zanten (16:58.9) notching 5th in the individual competition.

Strelow (24:49.0) and Mayne (25:06.1) finished 58th and 62nd in their race, which featured 77 harriers chuggin’ away.

Pope John Paul II and Liberty Bell netted girls and boys team titles, respectively, with Chloe Overberg of Asotin (18:36) and Daniel Quintana of Ilwaco (16:30.9) winning individual crowns.

Cael Wilson and teammates were honored Friday at an awards banquet. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

Boys soccer is up first.

With fall sports officially ending Saturday for Coupeville High School — when three cross country runners compete at the state meet — Wolf coaches and athletes are starting to transition into awards season.

CHS coach Robert Wood and his 19 booters kicked things off Friday with a season-closing shindig.

Senior Xavier Murdy earned Ballon d’Or (best player) honors in voting by his teammates, while sophomore Nick Guay was honored with the Golden Boot for leading the Wolves in goals.

Cael Wilson, Andrew Williams, Aidan Wilson, and Murdy were tabbed as MVP’s, with Josh Guay locking down Most Improved Player honors.

Andrew Williams unloads on the ball.

There were six Wolves who nabbed that award, with Cameron Epp, Josh Guay, Nick Guay, Eddie Perera, Grant Steller, and Williams honored.

Coupeville players are also eligible for All-League consideration when Northwest 2B/1B League coaches conduct their voting later this month.
